Exploring Preston Park With Curiosity and Excitement
Children from Years 3, 4 and 5 at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Academy in Billingham enjoyed an exciting and educational day out at Preston Park Museum & Grounds. From history to hands‑on science, the trip was filled with discovery, learning and plenty of fun.
Stepping Into the World of John Walker
During the visit, pupils explored exhibits dedicated to John Walker, the inventor of the friction match. They learned about his groundbreaking creation and how it shaped everyday life.
The children also spent time on the museum’s renowned Victorian Street, where volunteers brought the past to life with stories, demonstrations and insights into what life was like during that era. The children were captivated — especially by the traditional shops and the chance to imagine themselves living in Victorian times.
Science in Action With Big Science UK
The excitement continued with a brilliant workshop led by Big Science UK. Pupils mixed chemicals, observed reactions and took part in a hands‑on experiment mirroring how John Walker combined materials to ignite the very first friction match. The session sparked curiosity, scientific thinking and lots of “wow” moments as the children saw chemistry come to life right in front of them.
A Day Filled With Learning, Fun and Proud Moments
Throughout the trip, the children behaved beautifully, showing respect, enthusiasm and teamwork. They represented the school with pride and were a real credit to the Holy Rosary community.
A Memorable Experience for All
It was a wonderful day that blended history, science and curiosity, leaving the children inspired and full of excitement to continue learning back in the classroom.
