Exploring Lunar New Year Traditions

At Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Primary School in Billingham, our Early Years class spent the day immersed in the vibrant celebrations of Lunar New Year. The classroom came alive with colour, creativity and cultural discovery as the children learned about this important festival observed by millions around the world.

Hands-On Activities and Cultural Learning

To deepen their understanding, the children took part in a wide range of activities. They crafted their own lanterns, explored the rhythms and movements of dragon dancing, and even set off on an exciting dragon hunt around the classroom!

There were smiles all round as the children also had the chance to try fortune cookies — always a highlight — adding an extra touch of fun (and good fortune!) to the day.

Discovering the Story of the Zodiac

As part of their learning, Pearl Class listened to the traditional tale of how the Jade Emperor created the twelve zodiac years. Through this engaging story, the children discovered how the animals raced to earn their place in the calendar and how these zodiac signs are still used to measure time today.

A Busy Day Filled with Joy and Discovery

It’s safe to say that Pearl Class had a wonderfully busy and exciting day. The children showed fantastic enthusiasm and curiosity throughout every activity, making the celebration both meaningful and memorable.
